Die Analyse der BfR sowie die darauf aufbauende Bewertung der EFSA enthalten schwerwiegende Mängel, kritisieren die Forscher. Sie sei in Teilen „wissenschaftlich unakzeptabel“, und die Ergebnisse seien „durch die vorliegenden Daten nicht gedeckt“. In dem Schreiben fordern die Wissenschaftler demnach die EU-Kommission auf, bei ihren Entscheidungen „die fehlerhafte Bewertung der Efsa nicht zu beachten“. Koordinator des offenen Briefes der Wissenschaftler ist  Krebsforscher Christopher Portier, Ex-Direktor des US National Toxicology Program. Er gehört zu den Forschern, die Glyphosat im Auftrag der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) und deren Krebsagentur IARC bewertet haben.
